English for Social Work I is first of two compulsory courses of English at the undergraduate study of social work. The course puts an emphasis on relevant English terminology, drawing comparisons to Croatian. The course covers various topics relating to law, organisation of government, social work and social policy. In the first part of the course, definitions of law are discussed an outline is provided of the various branches of law. Next, the topic of organisation of government in democratic societies is dealt with, including a description of the composition and powers of the main bodies of all government branches. Focus then moves onto social policy, with all its aspects and measures, and connection to social work. In the second part of the course, after the mid-term exam, the students are acquainted with the definition of social work by the International Federation of Social Workers. The next topic is education, in which the Croatian education system is presented, from pre-school to higher, with an emphasis on the education of social workers. Further to that, an introduction to employment law is presented, including the various forms of employment, the employment contract, worker benefits and rights, as well as employment disputes and remedies. Special attention is given to employment of social workers, the various settings they work in and skills required in their work. FInally, students are acquainted with demography, and in particular the demographic data and trends and their effect on social policy. In addition to original texts by the author, the textbook features excerpts from authentic texts and numerous exercises and activities aimed at active acquisitiong of professional terminology.
